The legend
Legend has it that the first map of San Marzano arrived in Naples in 1770 in the hands of the Viceroy of Peru. A gift for the King of Naples. The King tasted it, was amazed and gave it to the people. It thus spread throughout the volcanic territory surrounding Vesuvius. For our land, our table and our cuisine the celebration began.
The test
At the beginning of the 20th century there was finally certainty of the presence of the famous ecotype. “A gourmet's delight, the scent of Sundays and special holidays, San Marzano gained great appreciation from a gastronomic point of view” (www.regione.campania.it). It was then that San Marzano was defined as "Red Gold" for the economic value it had managed to acquire for farmers.
Fame
Domenico Rea, Strega award-winning journalist and writer, in a reportage dedicated to the cultural and gastronomic traditions of Campania, was the first to define San Marzano as the King of Tomatoes.
The success
In 1980, Campania's tomato production represented 25% of the national production and constituted the main part of the raw material used by the processing industries for the production of peeled tomatoes.
The crisis and the rebirth
In 1988, a virus affected all the crops in San Marzano. The effect is devastating, so much so that the King of Tomatoes seems destined to disappear. At the same time, he begins hard work to recover the genetics of the Red Gold of Campania. After about eight years, San Marzano is safe.
San Marzano DOP
July 2, 1996 is a great day for all of us. San Marzano is recognized with the Protected Designation of Origin and its new name becomes Tomato San Marzano dell'Agro Sarnese-Nocerino DOP. A day of celebration.
The consortium
The Consortium for the Protection of San Marzano Tomato PDO is established which allows its protection and relaunch on an international basis.
